Kati McDermith 1:21
I don’t know if I’m the man. I’m the manufacturing girl. Okay. Um, yeah, I just love manufacturing. I started in the manufacturing industry and I think 2011 2012 2011 And once I saw how big huge machines were made, like those big tractors that drive over the cornfields and spray them with once I saw those being built, I was sucked in. I couldn’t stop. I love it. I love big machines, manufacturing, promoting manufacturing. I just I love all of it all the little like the suppliers or the manufacturers. So yeah, that’s how I got started. I just saw it and loved it and I haven’t stopped.
Curt Anderson 2:10

Kati McDermith 2:45
oh boy, how the whole party get started. I mean, it’s just like two things that have converged I had been doing lead generation for so long telemarketing, cold calls, scheduling appointments, things like that. And then I started in the manufacturing industry doing that and that’s just kind of how I got here to this point. I started my eye when I was little my dad worked at the Will Packer foundry big huge foundry in the area that like supports families in the like Tri County area so I just I always admired those who worked in the factory and I don’t know it’s just that’s just all like a perfect storm everything converged and came together and this is what I do now.
Curt Anderson 3:30
That’s awesome. And we have a bunch of hellos come in as we Ingres here today man angry on Friday we’ve got Vail in the house Val hope you had a wonderful weekend Mike There we go. Donnelly will Taylor is here guys. Thank you Thank you for being here

today. All my fans.
Curt Anderson 3:47
These are good good you know so alright. Katie so let’s uncover a lot here. Okay. And what I absolutely love what you said Why Why is manufacturing so important demonized huge history buffs Daymond we’ve got some great history guys coming up on our program. And you know, what’s fascinating, especially, you know, Wisconsin say throughout the Rust Belt, there’s a lot of communities that that those communities are built on manufacturing, boy, their their economic success really ties to manufacturing. And you’ve shared a little bit so I know it goes deep in your roots and your family friends. Talk a little bit about in Wisconsin, how important is manufacturing to you, your family, your corner of the world? Let’s let’s go there for a minute.
Kati McDermith 4:26
I just don’t think that one can really understand how important manufacturing is unless they see it and they see how it supports families. Like it’s not just building something that you can buy and take home and use. It’s the manufacturer support families and they support other businesses so much so much other business needs manufacturing to thrive.
Damon Pistulka 4:50
Just you just gave me it is yeah, no doubt because when you look at you know, a small manufacturer, if they’re if they’re employing 1520 25 people, that’s 25 lives are impacting 25 people, they’re helping them to, you know, buy food, you know, put the kids through college, whatever it is put them in cars, homes, whatever. And it does make a lot of difference. And then when you look at just the business that they do, they need people that are going to do contracting work and, you know, whatever electrical work, they need maintenance people to do help them there’s so many different ways that helps the community they’re in. Definitely,
Curt Anderson 5:26
absolutely. That’s and that’s a wonderful thing. When you think about it, you know, our manufacturers are truly the heroes of our economy, you know, their service sector, tech sector, you know, everything is important. Everything comes together. Yeah, boy, the bloodline on the you know, the backbone of our country is truly based on manufacturing. So, Katie, we are connected through our wonderful Twitter group on Thursday, we have a bunch of our Twitter, Twitter mates if you will, on here. USA manufacturing, Twitter hour every Thursday, two o’clock Eastern time. Yep, timezone Iran. Just work backwards. Talk a little bit about how did it how did the Twitter group come on your radar? And I know like you are absolutely hysterical. You bring a great energy, great passion to the Twitter group talk, how did it come on your on your radar and share some of the relationships and the camaraderie that you found at that Twitter group?
Kati McDermith 6:17
Oh, man, that is my favorite thing that I probably ever signed up to do. I heard about it from the marketing director at MMI. She said we were invited to host a Twitter our the Twitter chat. And I wanted to know if you want to do it, and I’m like, I don’t even know how to use Twitter. No, I don’t want to do it at all. I’m like you do it a lot. So I set up a Twitter account just so that I could sit in on this and watch her and then like support in the comments. Well, then I just I was crazy. I figured out that I can send gifts every time I send in a message on the on the Twitter chat. So that’s become my favorite hour of the week, USA manufacturing hour, because I just Oh man, I have so many good friends from there and just sitting and answering the questions and learning from each other. Sometimes we have topics that I can’t even answer the questions to and I’m learning from and I’m writing notes down the whole time. So but oh my gosh, if so many people I’ve met since since then. And my life has changed since then. Honestly, I’m not even kidding. You know? Dan bigger Ruby. Julie from Bradwell. Kirsten, I’m John Bufalino. Right, David? Nigel like these guys, they’re they’re my they’re my homies.
Curt Anderson 7:40
Yes, big you know, we’ll tailor jobs a little note to us here and how about this one from God bless gal Man, fuck a lot. finally get to see Katie on video, and honey cow
Kati McDermith 7:51
girl
Curt Anderson 7:52
and yell jobs. This little bomb for us today. So get a gal. Thank you. God bless you. Happy Monday to you. And so let’s see. I’ll come back up here. Get rid of that. Damon, you like
Damon Pistulka 8:03
that? Right? Yeah, hit it again. Oh, okay.
Curt Anderson 8:05
So I Katie. So all sorts of fun things on on Thursday. No, Nicole Donnelly just chimed in this past Thursday and a Twitter group. She was like completely blown away. So what do you tell manufacturers in like, even like yourself, like when I first heard about this, like Twitter, you know, it’s 140 280 characters. Like how do you build that on Twitter? If somebody has never watched the magic? That happens on Thursdays? What would? What would you share with that person that manufacture? You’re like, Dude, you got to get on this Twitter group. I’m telling you like, what do you what do you share to somebody that hasn’t seen it? Before?
Kati McDermith 8:39
I do. I just tell everybody, you got to get out. It’s the fastest hour on the internet, you’ll never regret it. Just set up your profile. Try it twice. Because the first time you’re not you’re gonna be like, Whoa, what just happened two hours over. And then after that, it’s just, oh, it’s just learn as you go. It’s gravy. It’s so fun. Um, every week, there’s a new host. Every week. It’s a new topic. And the topic is either centered around manufacturing or just a topic that’s going to help us work in the manufacturing industry, whether it be marketing or networking or sales. So it’s just the topics are fantastic. The hosts are fantastic. The group. Yeah, I just love it. You got to go. Yeah, everybody’s gotta go.
Curt Anderson 9:23
It’s just awesome. And even Glenn dropped by to say hello here, so I’ll drop this when we need to connect with you on the program sometime. I know she’s super active with a Twitter group now. Katie, there’s another thing that I’ve found out that that you have a love for bad dad jokes is that do I have that correctly?
Kati McDermith 9:39
Dad jokes. I love dad jokes. I love good dad jokes. I love any dad joke, even if it’s bad.
Curt Anderson 9:45
Oh, we got two bad dad joke guys. I care and so we won’t go there too. But I just have a question. Oh, I’m
Damon Pistulka 9:50
going there.
Curt Anderson 9:51
I have a question for you. You might not go there. I’m going oh, if if? If if a group of gorillas start a company, what do you call it? group of gorillas start a company. What do you call that? Monkey Business.
Unknown Speaker 10:07
Oh my goodness.
Curt Anderson 10:10
That’s all it is. It’s monkey. So I have a couple more for you, Katie. It’s awesome. Alright, so Katie, so your business development expert and lead gen and I’m going to take a deep dive on. I mean, I love I’ve been following your company for years, finally, underneath the hood of somebody that’s actually there. So I now have this wonderful relationship. We’re going to build a long term friendship here. So Dave and I are super bullish on online marketplaces directories. I think that is so critical. We’re gonna take a dive there. But before we go there, I know you’re very modest, very humble. Share some of your superpowers on this. You are the lead gen guru, business development person for for 16 years. Share a little bit some of your secret sauce, some of your secret tips for our of our comrades here, let’s hear some of your your secret tips if you don’t mind. I
Kati McDermith 10:57
don’t know if I have any secret tips. I gotta be honest with you guys, I learn everything from you guys, and everybody in your chat. And everybody that I’ve connected with, I’m just an avid learner from those who rocket honestly, I a lead gen is not a very glamorous job at all. And back in the day when it was just literally cold calling and you had to make you know 80 dials 120 dials a day. You know, I went I came from that in a call center. And I I really yearned for that connection, that relationship building. And oftentimes I was in the boss’s office because I was not meeting quota. I was not making my dials, and I was not scheduling appointments at the rate that everybody else around me was doing. But I made awesome connections and I scheduled awesome appointments that ended up becoming long term sales for the people, I was setting the appointments for him. So I just became more sought after. And I just kept breaking the rules everywhere I went people would hired me because they had heard good things. And I would just break the rules. And then now it come to find out. I break the rules all the time. And it’s awesome. Everybody breaks the rules. The good people break the rules. They’re sitting on LinkedIn. And they’re finding people that way, but they’re also connecting on a much higher level making much more meaningful relationships, which is beneficial for everybody.
Curt Anderson 12:29
Right? It is awesome. So I think Damon we’re older dudes, man, Billy Joel, did he say good girls die young? Was that a song from like, 100 years ago? So Katie, I love you know, you’re not the good girl. You’re breaking the rules. Man, you picked everybody’s curiosity. Secret Sauce? What are some of these rules that you’re breaking? Give us give us some? Let’s go there. What was some of your rules were breaking you how are people just attracted to Katie, let’s hear it.
Kati McDermith 12:55
The rules that I’m breaking is that I it’s quality over quantity. I am not making 100 dials a day. In fact, I might make four dials a week. Now, I’m just not doing it. I’m just not making the phone calls and doing cold calling anymore. Because I don’t need to cold call. Like non stop. I’m working in and working in my community in my online community. So I’m doing it that way. And I’m spending my time building relationships that might not benefit me or the company I work for today. But as long as it benefits somebody, the other person, maybe just a friend, maybe we work on a project together like that is that’s breaking the rule. So my goal is not necessarily sell, sell, sell dial dial dial set appointments. My goal is to meet a need fit somewhere and make relationships with people and talk about manufacturing all the time.
Curt Anderson 13:51
Man what? And you get paid to do this. My goodness. It’s like oh my gosh,
Kati McDermith 13:54
I tell my boss all the time. I would do this for free. I really would
Damon Pistulka 13:59
think often but yeah, too often. Yeah.
Kati McDermith 14:02
I love my job. I love the industry that I’m in. And I love the company I work for. I mean,
Curt Anderson 14:09
in here that I get to pull the coal on this day. Yeah, I love that. Good people break the rules. Oh, this is awesome. Here’s another one. Here’s another one. So great comments here today from everybody. So Katie, let’s go there for a minute. Okay. You’re working with somebody, you are the Go Giver. That’s why you fit so wonderfully with us. Boy, the Twitter group again, boy, a lot of kudos here for our Twitter group on Thursday. You know, average, what I’ve found is just as magnetic camaraderie, everybody has their backs. It’s like you said, you know there’s a subject matter expert each week. Somebody comes in with a great topic and then you have like just a flock of other experts that are chiming in sharing their advice, their expertise, so on and so forth. And that’s what you’re sharing that you do on a daily basis. You are the Go Giver. So give us a couple examples are like so you know what type of person are you helping? You’re educating, moving the bar for them. Give us an example or two, like what types of problems are you solving on a daily or weekly basis?
Kati McDermith 15:07
Oh, boy, I don’t know that I solve any problems on a daily or weekly basis. Although I try, I try. I really, really tried to encourage folks to clearly identify their targets and search for a specific target when they are in a very niche area, or maybe they’re not. But regardless, I really like to help people identify a, an ideal target, and then build lists of other targets that are similar based off of that. Um, and I don’t know what else like, Can you be more specific? What do you want to know?
Curt Anderson 15:44
Well, how about this? Let’s change gears a little bit. So let’s, so you’re with industry net.com. I have that correct industry,
Kati McDermith 15:52
as well. So I’m with Gemini, Gemini is the company that powers industry net and industry select. So the difference so industry net is a sourcing website. It’s an online sourcing website, where it’s free for people to come out and source parts and services. And they are then connected with suppliers of said parts and services. And industry select is a site where folks can go on and they can build lists of companies based off of their criteria. So it’s a marketing lead gen. Manufacturer Intel database.
Curt Anderson 16:31
Yeah, I absolutely love that. And so I’ve been I’ve been actually a huge fan of industry net for years I’ve been promoting so like Dave and I, we do training with different manufacturers. We have a list of like companies and we like I’m gonna geek out on SEO for a minute. So we’re always talking like, Hey, you guys want quality backlinks, get those good backlinks and I’m on you’re on my list. And so here, we’re finally connected. So let’s take a little deep dive on share mn n and I and I for anybody that’s not familiar with an AI please share what is this service? And then I’d like to go into industry net and industry select.
Kati McDermith 17:07
Sure. Yeah, so MSI is manufacturers news have been around since 1912, the country’s oldest and largest compiler of industrial manufacturing data. So we hold information for like 400,000 manufacturers, almost a million decision makers. So all in the manufacturing industry we also have we also reach into the energy gas and oil industry as well. I generally specialize in the manufacturing side. Awesome.
Damon Pistulka 17:35
I remember getting it done when it was still when it would get it on the DIS books first one I saw was on a book and then it was on CDs and OH MAN
Kati McDermith 17:45
Yeah. Yet we still have the books are still popular. The big fat books. I have someone on my desk I’d show you but it’s too heavy for me to pick out. Yeah. And then we Yeah, then we moved on to disk. We kept the books and we tried disk and then from there we just went online. So
Damon Pistulka 18:04
well I remember you I mean that’s that’s how when you are prospecting years ago that’s what you use if you’re selling to other manufacturers. That’s what you did. You went through and figured out who the hell was in your area and and started talking to people. Yep,
Curt Anderson 18:19
yeah, absolutely. How about this comment Katie what you’re doing is cutting edge value to and being right there with the audience makes brand stickiness so you are so Madison Nicole’s back on stage. I’ve got to experience Katie secret sauce this morning. She sent me a personal LinkedIn video message. So how is that man you’re just out to lunch here. So guys, what I what I again super excited about industry net. So for guys, for anybody out there that’s not familiar with industry, not Katie, could you please do like a, let’s do a tutorial give a walk through what what is the value? What are the benefits for a manufacturer to take advantage of some of these services?
Kati McDermith 18:55
Okay, so on industry net being that sourcing website when when sourcing, people are going going and looking for parts and services, they are going they’re going to maybe Google, they might google it and we’re going to come up, or maybe they already know and they’re just on their sourcing parts and services. So the benefit for the for the suppliers of these parts and services and manufacturers is to be listed, visibly listed because when people send RFQs like they’ll send blanket RFQs out for you know a ton of parts for a big project they have coming up, they’re wanting to build a long relationship or they’re wanting to set up a new vendor relationship. It’s really important that people who are suppliers of industrial parts and services are listed so that you’re getting those RFQs and the people who are actually buying right now are able to find you. I have actually I just gathered a list of the top searches for industry net for the last quarter. I always post them every week what the top searches are So I went for you guys. I went and gathered all of it for the first quarter. Do you want to hear them? Yes, yes, definitely. Okay, so it is no surprise to me that number one and number two are chemicals and casting, those two are back and forth all the time castings and chemicals. One of those two is always number one. So that’s number one, and two. So number one is chemicals. Number two is casting three is food products. Number four is printing, which is followed by plating and pumps, and signs, tools, valves, and tubing. So those are the top 10 most searched for industrial products and services on industry net for the first quarter so far.
Curt Anderson 20:43
That is phenomenal. So again, I just want to I really want to dig deep here, because I’m thrilled about this. I love the service that you guys provide. I think it was so powerful. So let’s speak to that manufacturer out there. Katie, our goal is how do we stop being the best kept secret, right, all of our so many of our manufacturers, unfortunately, they are best kept secret, small custom job shops or you know, machine shops, whatever the service that they provide. And you know, in the past marketing was in their absolute top priority. Maybe they went to trade shows, or they had a handful of customers and just kind of did their thing. COVID comes along, can’t go to trade shows sales reps can’t go on the road. So now their world has changed. So now they’re scrambling trying to get online. So now SEO was daunting Pay Per Click, click is expensive. Your service as I feel are in please correct me if I’m wrong or confirm if I’m correct. Is a great it’s almost like a little mini search engine. Right? Not many it’s a massive it’s a but it’s a specialized search engine. So I don’t have to go through all the clutter of Google. I can go right to industry net. And I can look for value vetted service providers that are part of your network. Do I might close on it? Do I have that? Correct?
Kati McDermith 21:50
Correct? Yeah. So any supplier of an industrial parts or service is going to be listed considered like the yellow pages? Yep, everyone’s going to be listed. It’s just a matter of how well you want to be listed. How is how well you perform so you make sure your profile is up to date, some of them are free. So just make sure your profile is up to date and that you have accurate contact info on there. Upload your logos you can upload catalogs videos photos, there’s so much you can do on there to manage your profile and to just get the most sight the most eyes.
Curt Anderson 22:27
Now Katie, I think Damon if I’m not mistaken, I think she said my favorite word. Yes. Free. I
Damon Pistulka 22:32
heard it. I heard it is never free. I heard it
Curt Anderson 22:34
at i did i I’m older. Can you say that again? Did you say free? Yeah, free. It’s free. It’s free guys. If you have if you are a marketer and you are working with your manufacturers, I strongly encourage you invite you welcome you beg you implore you, please encourage your clients to go on industry net and get listed is Katie, I’m sorry. What? Again? What was it? It’s how much?
Kati McDermith 22:56
I mean, I don’t want to make a big deal out of it or anything. But it’s free. It starts at free anyways, I mean, you can pay you can read, that’s fine. I mean, you get the more you pay, the more you get, I guess more it’s free. It’s a free service,
Curt Anderson 23:11
man. So all right word is the word of the day guys on March 14 2022. As Ingre hashtags is our favorite word free for so first off, it is free, it is a great resource. It’s a great tool to put your company on there. Even if you’re like hey it’s not you know, there’s it’s almost excusable not to do it. So get your company’s get your clients get your manufacturers get everybody listed on and this is this like this isn’t a public service. I guess it is a public service announcement. Yes, it is. It is not a commercial it’s just like when you are a manufacturer you want to be everywhere, right? We like to preach Nicole WHAT DO WE Daymond what do we like to preach? We want to dominate search right? And this and partnering aligning yourself with industry dotnet is a great tool great resource to do so. So Katie Did I hear you say video I can list can I eat less content? Can I list like blogs I can list like all sorts of information on my profile if I wanted to go there?
Kati McDermith 24:10
Yeah, certainly you can. You can put videos we have some really fun profiles that have a lot of really good videos on there. Your catalog your line card photos of your product lines, there’s deep backlinks as well. So we so when someone clicks on a particular like categories like that’s who they kicked on cast, I clicked on castings, it would bring them directly to your website, your that specific page that has castings listed, for example. So yeah, it’s just there’s so many awesome tools on there. Logos, banners. Wow links here so I want
Curt Anderson 24:48
to just avoid any confusion. How much
Kati McDermith 24:53
it starts at free. Basic listings are free, totally free. You just make sure all your info is correct. And then there are opportunities for you to take advantage of our content marketing services as well. And we like to write blogs and to link blogs and press releases, you know, we do so much of that. It’s so fun.
Curt Anderson 25:15
I’m glad you said that, because I was going through a bunch of blogs, and you guys have a bunch of great content on your blog that is helpful for manufacturers. Up to date, current, you’re talking about the Ukraine situation, talk about different states, you’re talking about different programs. So again, there’s a wealth of information on your website. So massive directory, all sorts of data. Man, you guys are such an incredible resource for manufacturers to take advantage of. So Katie, let’s go with Okay, so that was industry net, right? Let’s see. net.com right industry net.com guys are gonna see net.com Jot that down again, when you contact any of our marketers that are here today, you call your manufacturing clients, they’re gonna be like, man, thank you for this new, free resource. Let’s talk about industry select Katie, what so anybody out there does not familiar with industry select? Let’s take a little deep dive, what that serves to provide there for manufacturing.
Kati McDermith 26:06
This is probably my favorite topic ever. I am obsessed with industry Select Back when I was a tiny little lead generator making calling, calling manufacturers to schedule appointments for outside sales reps, when I was doing fastener lead gen for fasteners, you know, nuts, bolts and screws fasteners. Um, so when I started doing that I was using a database provider, let’s just call it that. I’ve used them all. I mean, I’m not I’m an equal opportunity person here I have used probably every single purchase list database that anybody could possibly use. I’ve just been doing lead gen for so long. When we found industry select, oh, it changed, everything changed. Because my my contact ratios, my appointment setting like everything was way better. My contact ratios tripled overnight, simply because I was able to pull up a company profile, tripled, my contact ratios tripled. I could pull up a profile and it would say Pam clerk is in purchasing. And I would call and be like, can I talk to Pam Clark. Like I knew who I was talking to. I knew who I was asking for the real difference between industry select and the other databases out there is first of all, we only work in the manufacturing industry. We only profile US manufacturers. That’s roughly about 400,000 companies in America. And for a roughly about 400,000. Yeah. And our in house staff is the people behind it. We are calling these companies verifying the data. It’s verbal conversations. It’s very highly accurate information on these companies. And that’s what changed my life because I was making a phone call and I was getting my contact and I was scheduling an appointment. And it was so easy. So I love industry select and I called MMI and said, Can I work for you guys? Everybody needs to know how awesome this thing is. Can I work for you guys and tell everybody about it? And they’re like, how would you do that? Right. Wow, I would do webinars every week to tell people how industry select works and show them everything I can. And that was in about a month in a month. That will be 10 years ago. I’ve been doing webinars for 10 years. You
Curt Anderson 28:34
got Damon? What do Dude, this is awesome. I’m trapping my mic dude, I buy a new one. He’s like I’m breaking I’m throwing it. I’m not even dropping it. I’m throwing it. Yeah, my I Katie, pause. Pause. We have to we have to retract what you just said here. Okay. First. I think we I think we made it clear about the free thing now. But that was industry net. So let’s talk about industry select. I heard it makes your life 10 times easier. Is 10 to low my underestimating 100 times easier, right? Tons times easier, a powerful tool so much you became such a raving fan. You said hey, could I become could I and I was the guy that bought his own company wasn’t like, was it the HAIR CLUB from her club guy? But anyway, that was another story but Katie, I think so you became like the biggest raving fan cheerleader and 10 years later you’re still in the company as a raving fan cheerleader. Do I have that correct?
Kati McDermith 29:36
Yeah, for sure. I love MSI and I love industry select I love industry net too. I just I really have a passion for industry select a really, really do. It’s just it’s a great tool. Anybody who’s doing telemarketing lead generation and needs to contact manufacturers. You got to have it because you got to know who you’re talking to. You have to and when whenever I I see those interviews that people have with manufacturers. And then they say, um, what advice do you have for people who are trying to sell to you? And they always say, do your research. Okay, well if you’re doing your research on a subpar database you’re not really doing research. Yeah. So this this it’s just that is really powerful to me is the depth of information that’s in the profiles and the accuracy of that information.
