Curt Anderson 00:01
Hey Damon Happy Monday, man. How are you doing?
Damon Pistulka 00:03
I’m doing great Curt ready to go for this man excited for talk about a maximizing market impact with AI every day,
Curt Anderson 00:12
man. This is dude. Did you get some rest over the weekend? Because like, yeah, yeah. Are you sure are you hours
Damon Pistulka 00:19
last night?
Curt Anderson 00:20
Did you alright man I more than me. Even I even had to take a nap. I’m just kidding. But this is just going to be loaded. We’ve got a big week this week. We’re talking AI. And man, I’ve been looking forward to this for months. This is an honor. It is a privilege to introduce our dear friend, Karlaa. double A battery. Gregory, how about that one. So all right, Karlaa, Happy Monday to you. Thank you for joining us. How are you? I’m
Karlaa Gregory 00:20
doing good. I had a busy weekend too. So
Curt Anderson 00:53
back in the office, were back in the grind. And just you know what, thank you. I know how busy you are. What an honor privilege for you to join us here today. You’re the digital. You’ve had a career of digital marketing. And you are the Digital Marketing Manager at Sumitomo drive technologies. I had the honor of catching you at the industrial marketing Summit. You hit total homeruns in a panel discussion on AI. And if you remember I kind of like snuck up. I knew I was like, Hey, Karlaa, I have this little dance about weirdo. Yeah, who’s this? Who’s this creepy guy. Right. So. So Karlaa, we’re gonna kick things off. We’re gonna do a deep dive in AI and AI in just boy folks out there. drop us a note. Let us know that you’re out there. Give Karlaa a huge Hello. Connect with her on LinkedIn. Karlaa, before we dive into AI, I want to go back in time when we were just going back in time a little bit. You’re talking about 2008. But prior to 2008 I have a question for you my friend, Karlaa. When you were a little girl when you were a little girl who was your hero? Who is your hero when you’re a little girl growing up?
Karlaa Gregory 02:04
Who was my hero? The lights went out on me. I know my Xena. Xena the warrior princess Gina. Wow, Damon. That’s
Damon Pistulka 02:14
a first
Karlaa Gregory 02:16
that is a TBD. That would
Curt Anderson 02:18
match. That was she was bad Wasn’t she? So Karlaa just shared a little bit why was she and so why was she so inspiring to you?
Karlaa Gregory 02:26
She was just cool. And she was tall and she hadn’t like yell things I’m not gonna do and she was just always kicking butt. I’ll be professional. They ever see me just always taking
Damon Pistulka 02:38
care of business. That’s for sure. He
Curt Anderson 02:40
was taking care of business. Well, I love it. Great answer. That’s the first time that we’ve had that one panel. So thank you for sharing that. So let’s dive into Xena. So let’s take it one step further. Okay, so you go off, you go off to college. And let’s just share a little bit. What inspired you to dive into digital marketing, why bring your superpowers your skill, set your talents into the world of digital marketing? What drove you there?
Karlaa Gregory 03:06
Whoa. So I was trying to do PR, but there’s not a lot of money in PR. And if you’re not like PR certified, which takes years, it kind of can be hard to like continue to grow and get your foot in the door, especially like where I am. And I know there was a lot of overlap between PR and digital marketing. And so I had my first job out of college was doing PR for a nonprofit. And then I started doing marketing with it too. And then I realized that like I like marketing more than I like PR and I just been here ever since. Well,
Curt Anderson 03:43
I love it. And you and I had a fun conversation the other day you also share with me that you were the person in PR that hated math. Do I have that? Correct?
Karlaa Gregory 03:52
I still hate math. Look at my transcript from college because it was not pretty. She doesn’t
Curt Anderson 03:58
like that. But you know what, but I will share Damon, if you go on. I strongly encourage every connect with Karlaa on LinkedIn. If you look though, she hates math. She’s great at numbers because Karlaa, if you look on your LinkedIn profile, you have all sorts of great stats, over 10,000 inbound communications for 2023 that you drove for your company, you constantly are increase your organic traffic, you had an 18 100% ROI with Pay Per Click a campaign that you did. So those numbers so though you’re not a numbers person or maybe a math person, you certainly are driving great numbers for your company. Anything that you want to share on that.
Karlaa Gregory 04:34
Just don’t ask me what like scope is or any of that kind of stuff. But you know, stats are what drives us to do better. So you know, if you don’t know how it’s working, then what are you doing it for? If it’s not it was not good. It’s not making money even though not everything makes money if it’s not increasing brand awareness or anything were you doing before? Yeah, great,
Curt Anderson 04:56
great point. Hey, David. We’ve got a couple of friends here coming abroad. We’ve got him Hey, Timothy, you, Timothy. And we’ve got Yasmin. So hey, guys, Happy Monday to you. My friend says Xena, that makes sense. You can tell and he says Same here. He hates math. And he’s a programmer. So Karlaa, let’s dive in so long, just wonderful career of digital marketing into your passions, your skill set, diving into that, what attracted you to so Sumitomo? What, how did you make that transition there? And then we’re going to do a deep dive on your AI talents.
Karlaa Gregory 05:30
Okay, so I used to work at Liberty Tax, I can say that one. If you’re not sure what Liberty taxes, if you remember the people that used to be outside with the waivers, I’m not sure if they still do waivers, but that was me. And I was the social media specialist. So I’ve led every single black franchise, that was mostly me, but all the corporate pages, that was me. And you know, I love what I did there. But I realized that I wanted to do a little bit more with digital marketing, like, you know, we had different little small teams, we had email, we had this, but I’ve always like, want to learn more. So I’m like, I’m in the social media box. And I want to like when we try something else, so I dip my toe in, like SEO, I dipped my toe into creating landing pages. And then I realized, like, Okay, I think I can be more than just like the girl that sits on Facebook all day. Yeah. So from there, like every text ended up closing. So they moved from Virginia Beach to Texas. And I have wrote this really cool blog about the Avengers, and their tax their labor tax returns. And so I just happened to message my now boss, and x are like, Hey, you’re hiring, like I see this. And from there, I got the job at Sumitomo. And when I, when I joined a team, they were like, yeah, so we really liked your blog about the Avengers, because we’re all you know, we all have our favorites. This is when Game of Thrones is big. So we’re all you know, we’ve worked but we’re talking about Game of Thrones during lunch or other stuff. So the fact that I’ve got to relate to you know, taxes are very boring. So in fact, I got to relate like how many deductions Hawk I could get, because he had two kids here, like two kids. And one of the ways you know, like, who else? What’s in their name? Tony Stark, his lap. That’s not the in office deduction, kind of stuff like that.
Curt Anderson 07:26
Yeah, those travel expenses that he had put, you know, the suit and everything. There’s all sorts of deductions that Tony Stark could take advantage of right? Being a billionaire. Yeah. Absolutely. Love it. Well, what a great story, the event who knew that Avengers would help you get a job, you know, in a dog? You know, right. It’s all because of Xena. It’s her fault that
Karlaa Gregory 07:47
I wish I could have a sound but I’m so great. And so.
Curt Anderson 07:50
So, just wonderful. Let’s dive into what you seem so on, you know, on the cutting edge, staying ahead of the game, you know, what’s the latest? What’s the greatest? What inspires you, you know, a lot of times is just human nature. You know, we can get caught in that trap of like, kind of doing the same thing. hamster wheel. What inspires you to kind of keep everything new fresh for our other solo marketers out there?
Karlaa Gregory 08:13
Oh, so time, like there are only eight hours in a day. Yeah. And there’s always, you know, you say you have eight hours in a workday. But does that include the three meetings you have back to back the accidental watercooler talk that you’re doing for like 1015 minutes, like, you look at that your day is cut down and maybe six, maybe five, maybe the impromptu meetings are doing stuff that’s not in your, your typical to do, but you get an email that this needs to be that like, so because there’s no time AI is really, really helpful to just cut that out or increase time increase productivity for me.
Curt Anderson 08:49
Wow, absolutely love it. So let’s go ahead and dive in some best tips strategies, like what if you if you don’t mind going back in time? It wasn’t that far, long ago? What started what was your kickstart that got your AI career, you know, your venture started.
Karlaa Gregory 09:06
Um, so what made me start really using AI more is that everyone else is using peer pressure. But I was looking like this was a thing that I could ask questions to, so I could accent anything. And I was really curious as to how that could help like my output. And also, you know, I do a lot of SEO here at Sumitomo. And there’s many times where I’m like, I want to write this blog about, you know, torque or something like, before AI a lot of my content had to be so broad, like, what is torque? What does the gear motor because I’m not, you know, I’m not an engineer, I’m a marketer. I’m creative. I like kind of like, I hate math. So, you know, being able to use AI to get some more like in depth, detailed in depth like information, and then running it by, you know, the engineers or the product managers. That was really helpful because a lot of times there were very few edits. Like maybe there might be a tweak of the work. But the meat and the heavy technical stuff was correct. Right?
Damon Pistulka 10:06
Yeah. That’s cool. So did you, you know, this is interesting that you’re talking about this? Did you find that just because you had like a good base article to work with that it was really easy, it was a lot easier because that first piece was done or you started it AI enhanced it, and then you go to the product managers. I mean, what how much do you think that really saved by doing it that way?
Karlaa Gregory 10:36
Oh, so the way I do is I, I kind of define who I’m talking to you. So like, I get a I’ll have like a little bit of research where I know like the persona or the job title, which is also handy when doing like LinkedIn audiences. So if I know, hey, the top three, the top three personals we’re talking to are like maintenance managers, and operational managers. From there, I can have it like, and I have stuff to show with this, I can have it break down, like, what are their pain points? What is this? And then from there, I exit for outline, and I show that outline to the stakeholders like hey, engineer, Bob, this outline for this blog or this guy? Is this spot on? Is this what people would ask for? Do they care about this? And then from there, I just have chatting to you right at all. And I make sure to change the tone. And I tell it to include technical jargon. So it doesn’t sound like me, the girl who hates math is writing it.
Curt Anderson 11:35
Alright, there’s our first drop the mic right there. What a great hack that is. So let’s, I’m gonna dive let’s take, I’m gonna I’m gonna continue on this, if you don’t mind. Kyla, we had a great conversation the other day. And I was just blown away by some of the tactics and strategies that you were sharing with me. So let’s dive in for the solo marketer out there. I think this is so brilliant. You’re tailoring the prompt to that ICP? Well, you let’s even take it a step back further, if I heard you correctly the other day you were talking about like, are you using chat to help you identify those? And when we say ICP, those ideal customer profiles, avatars, whatever language that you use, Damon, we call them our soulmates? Who’s that soulmate that nutrient solution today, Karlaa, that are you creating, like, walk us through that process a little deeper, if you don’t mind?
Karlaa Gregory 12:24
So a lot of times, I will ask the person who’s asking for the data, like, I’ll just say, Hey, what’s your, you know, sometimes when talking to maybe like engineering, or technical people, they don’t have what you’re looking for? Yes, respectfully. But you know, if I’m saying like, hey, I need like, who’s buying it? You can say like, oh, yeah, someone who knows how to use SQL, I’m making stuff up, but like, I need a little bit more than like, I need more like where they care about and you can’t just say like, I care about shock load and maintenance. It’s like no, like, we’re they care about so sometimes just taking that persona and just dropping it into chalky beauty but giving it parameters like, hey, who cares in this industry? So if we’re talking about food and beverage industry, what would they care about for this, you know, for the operation? Right. And can I show you some stuff? Yeah, absolutely. Please
Curt Anderson 13:22
- So I again, if you’re just joining us, we’re here with Karlaa Gregory and this is telling you get your pen your notes your fingers to take notes, because this is masterclass time right here.
Karlaa Gregory 13:36
Oh, good guy. Sorry. No, go ahead. I was gonna before I go into that, I want to like, preface this by saying so I did make my own GPT. So some tomo is a global company, and we’re separated into regions. Region, i-man consists of US, Canada, Latin America and Brazil. And as a digital digital marketing manager, I do something like we’re not directly connected, but I do help them sometimes and with their campaigns and stuff. So I created this GPT I’m going to share my screw that is customized just for that.
Curt Anderson 14:14
Awesome. And while you’re pulling it up again, drop us a note. Let us know you’re out there Brenda’s popping in. Hey, Brenda. Happy Monday. Thank you for joining us. And Can
Karlaa Gregory 14:24
y’all see? Yep, we can. Alright, so this is my TPT I made is called one SMA. Anyone commit to GPT. I think you need GPT for to do so. Yeah. But you just kind of put like you configure it so I wrote the definition. You can see it says your digital marketing with b2b strategies for an industrial marketing. I put what I want to know I put some tasks that I want to do, and also include that my favorite term is technical jargon as needed. Here’s some like conversation starters. So you can always just add primary things that you do My x offhand. And the great thing about this is you can also upload your own documents. So here, when I’m going to show you this later, I uploaded, like our product showcase our food and beverage brochure, the spreadsheet, I had this conversation with our Canadian and US corporate industry managers for those campaigns that were running. And so I uploaded that data. So I love using this to start any campaigns. And I can share it with that. So when we get into customer profiles, you can see, or you can’t see because it’s so small. But this is what GPT helped me create. Is it still small everybody? Okay, so you know, for this one, we have Ethan, who is a reliability engineer, which is one of the titles I got from RCM, Olivia, the maintenance manager, and Liam, the operations manager, I didn’t that make up these names. But here is like, if you look at the top columns, you can see like what I wanted to know. And so I would just ask the GPT, like, you know, figure out the problems, and so on. So I have all of these. And what’s cool about having it uploaded to our custom GPT is that I can just say what I’m looking for, and it knows you can’t see the step. I can just say what I’m looking for, and it knows so, um, so Right. Older
Damon Pistulka 16:27
in Ethan that’ll engage with Ethan or Olivia or in Yeah, that and Oh, okay. Yeah,
Karlaa Gregory 16:34
so it knows, like, you know, Ethan is the reliability engineer, because that’s from the data that was already uploaded to the one SMA GPT. So it gave me a bunch of different blog articles. And that’s great. And then from here, I can just say, Make an outline for this. And it’ll like the outline, and then I’ll just run it through the output is, so I did actually make these and refresh. This is one that I am running now. So unless you’re in the food and beverage industry, you will never see it. So here’s a sneak peek. But this one is called Mastering maintenance. This guide was created with GPT. But it was reviewed by you know, our corporate entry managers, and I think a few of the engineers on my axe the DPT while making this, like what is the best? Like what interactive data can I make? Or can you give me to make this a more a guide that someone might print out, or, you know, filling using PDF, so gave me these charts. More charts like maintenance planning, creating a preventive maintenance calendar, like all these things for people to use. And I also made a another one that is more for Ethan, this other one, the one I just showed was for Olivia, or wherever the girl’s name is. But this one is called the reliability engineers playbook. And of course, again, it’s tailored to the food and beverage manufacturing industry. So using a US the problems and solutions, what they like, and put all this together. Some more charts and stuff that someone can use. With this campaign, we’ve actually had about 25 downloads, if not more between the US and Canada. Right now, this is still running top of funnel, but we’ve got some good feedback or some good reach and click throughs with this. Wow. That was a lot. I’m sorry.
Curt Anderson 18:34
No, no, no, no. Great, Karlaa And I actually saw there was a QR code on there as well. Right? Yeah,
Karlaa Gregory 18:41
put a QR code. I think that takes us. Yes, a QR code take you to the landing page or back to our website or brochure.
Damon Pistulka 18:49
Yeah. That is crazy. Cool. Sorry.
Curt Anderson 18:54
Oh, no, that was that was that was mere fact you didn’t need to. So hey, I’m gonna give a hello to a couple of friends here Jacob, Jacob. Hey, Jacob, Monday, definitely connect with Karlaa. You can tell this is like pure gold here. We’ve got Shiv Lika. If I’m saying that correctly, Happy Monday to you. Thank you for joining us. Brenda says I love this. Brenda, I couldn’t agree with ya love this. That’s a few things that I want to unpack right there. So, you know, as a solo marketer, you know, currently, you know, you’re doing a lot, right, you’re throwing on a lot of different hats through the day. And you know, you’re working for a global company very, look at how efficient that you are making this opportunity for folks. So if you’re, if you’re a break it down, so say, you know, pitcher that that sold marketer maybe, you know, half the morning they’re doing, you know, some HR work and then they’re doing this they’re like, Hey, I’m gonna dive in and start to do some marketing, you know, that person, right? How what are some first steps that you would encourage them to take, you know, going through that, you know, creating that buyer persona creating those topics? Is there any kind of a one on one that you would suggest for folks that are that are just starting their journey where you’ve already been in Hey,
Karlaa Gregory 20:00
I just want to say I’m, I’m a solo marketer, I’m so I have I have one employee, but yeah, you’re right, yeah. You’re pretty.
Curt Anderson 20:12
You’re pretty stretched out. So what would you say maybe advice to yourself, you know, a couple years go on when you started your AI journey, or for that new marketer, that’s like, Man, I’m doing all this stuff by hand, I have the same eight hours that you do, and you’re just doing so much more efficiently. What would be like a good, good first step, good starting point for that person. Oh,
Karlaa Gregory 20:33
and using AI, it would be to create your own GPT because it helps you like it helps you dive deep into what you’re trying to work on. So again, I’m not an engineer, I can upload like a catalog. Like it took me almost a minute Sumitomo Sun sweating, it took me about six months, if not longer to just even understand like, torque and gear ratio, and like, all these things that I didn’t learn. So if you have that set up, now you can start asking a question. So I use it as if it’s like my custom chatbot best friend like, Hey, could you explain torque like a fifth grader? And the output is going to be so simple and you’re like, oh, okay, like I just learned about cycloidal drives. I was like, I didn’t know what that was, was a string way gear grams zero idea. But now I know like a little bit more than if you threw me in a trade show. I could probably keep the people at the booth just a little bit longer.
Curt Anderson 21:33
It’s a great cocktail party conversation there. Right, Karlaa? We were talking about that Friday night right at that. company party. I’m just kidding. Couple more friends popping in kleos here today. Cleal. Happy Monday morning. Brenda says AI has changed my life and given me time. Love it. And she and shovel Lika says yep. Right. So guys, keep those comments coming again. You know, connect with Karlaa on LinkedIn. Karlaa, keep the conversation going. So set up your own Chico. Right. create those buyer personas. You know, I, you know, I don’t know about you, Damon, we hear you know, a lot of folks push back and are resistant to green, you know, hey, we sell through a lot of different people, it’s hard to narrow that down. I would, I would love to hear some advice that you have as far as like how you’ve created those personas, or how you’ve been able to narrow it down to you know, Livia, Liam are like these specific people, how have you been able to narrow that down?
Karlaa Gregory 22:29
So that’s it, that’s not really an AI. Thanks. So nailing it down. It’s really just having an in person conversation with whoever I need to talk to you. And you know, AI does not exclude people. So it’s not like you can’t just work in AI, you have to meet with people, you have to talk to other people. And also, like when you do use AI to write, you still have to review it, you just can’t take it at face value and go, oh, good luck. Like, there’s still, there’s still that human element, which is important to remember, because a lot of people still think like, oh, eight is gonna take my job. And it’s like, no, if you saw the first draft of anything I said, you’d be like, no. So it’s not taking into one’s job.
Damon Pistulka 23:09
Yeah. Yeah. Well, it’s, it’s cool how you’ve integrated it and the human element in developing this content, right? Because it’s helping you get that initial draft much faster, much closer to what, what it should be. And then the technical people are reviewing it. And we’re getting some review, rather than trying to have the technical people develop it, or develop their sections in it, which is, I have always thought that the zero to 50% on developing content is much harder than I’ve got something, I’m going to edit it and make it look sound like I want is,
Karlaa Gregory 23:48
you know, they have a job, not a job suit, but they have you know, full time things to do to me a little bit more important than my eyes. Maybe not. But you know, like they have to do all this deep engineering stuff again, I don’t know. But at one point we were asking for, I think our engineers to write like white paper a year. And now with me using AI, I can write more and just say, Hey, look at this. This is good. And I get my thumbs up. It’s good to go.
Damon Pistulka 24:15
Yeah, yeah, you can bring it to them rather than have them write it. Yeah,
Curt Anderson 24:19
the engineers are just they’re just singing praises of like, thank goodness. Ai, right.
Karlaa Gregory 24:28
Yeah, another thing I use AI for is, like more interactive stuff. So a lot of people just use it to write me a blog write me a headline, right via email, but it does a lot more. Can I show you this calculator that I made? Yeah. Wow. Wow, that’s cool. We show this calculator. So back in the 90s 2000s. Someone made a bunch of really, really amazing calculators on Excel. But this is how they look. So sometimes it’s like who right like, you know, we want to have this like built in. Sometimes you might not have Excel. And so I download this. I had a blurb because stuff, but I downloaded this, and I tossed it into chat GPT that was the oh, wait, nope, can’t toss it into chat GPT. And this is the output again, things have been blurred. But you can see where I put the Excel sheet. I didn’t recreate it. I could have probably prompted it better. But
Damon Pistulka 25:41
we’re still seeing the Excel sheet. Oh, sorry, guys. Oh, that’s great.
Karlaa Gregory 25:46
Yeah, okay. Okay. Awesome. Yeah, I did that. And then I say, recreate this calculator and style the best you can, again, probably could have added some home. But and from that, you know, I did put it in my one SMA calculator. I got all of this. And this is cut a little bit. But this is, you know, it told me I was using Python and all these things that I couldn’t do on my own. And from that, it actually should have this is the on style version. So again, don’t take this to heart. But I’m going to put the calculations in
Damon Pistulka 26:25
for it built that HTML thing like that. Yes.
Karlaa Gregory 26:29
So this is what was showing on the Excel sheet. That is, that’s, that’s, and I’m gonna go back. So you can see that it actually matches what’s
Curt Anderson 26:41
Oh, my goodness. That’s
Damon Pistulka 26:43
insane. that I never would have thought about using it like
Karlaa Gregory 26:47
that. Yeah. So you know, sometimes it does take a little tweaking, like if there someone wrote something weird. But if you catch it and say, Hey, no, this should be divided, or this should be multiplied. It’ll fix it right up. And yeah, that is.
Curt Anderson 27:03
That is absolutely brilliant. You took a spreadsheet,
Damon Pistulka 27:08
downloaded it and had chat GPT generate the HTML code to recreate it on a web page.
Karlaa Gregory 27:17
Yes. And I’ll just Yeah, yeah. So right now you know, this was like I was I won’t say it’s advanced. But this is like advanced but I use AI to do other smaller tasks. Sometimes like when you download these big contact sheets, like it might have like if you’re looking into doing like personalization for like ABM, and the sheet has everyone in like one column like Karlaa Gregory in column A, you’re like, No, I don’t want to say hello, Karlaa Gregory, you want to say hello, Karlaa. You can just upload a spreadsheet and say, Hey, break up column A, into a and b, instead of doing like 1000 You know, 1000 by yourself or knowing the formula in Excel because I’m no XL Pro.
Curt Anderson 28:04
Wow. Okay, that was super, super sophisticated. Yeah, that was off off the charts. I’ve got a couple more people popping in here venti is here today. Happy Monday to you Dean says rocket legends Dean. Thank you for stopping. We’ve got Suraj he says GPT is not bad for humans. It helps us be more smarter. I couldn’t agree more. Man. If you’re just joining us drop us a note in the chat box. You definitely want to connect with Karlaa Damon.
Damon Pistulka 28:34
It’s this is cool is cool. No doubt mind blowing.
Curt Anderson 28:37
This is like this. Like, like, a lot of cool. I need AI to tell me like page number two. Hey, I want a demon. You know why we’re coming to the top of the hour. I believe like I’m losing track of time because I am just so captivated here. I’m gonna share a couple of things that people say Karlaa, I reached out to your mom and your some of your friends and family and I got some comments about you. You’re ready. Are you sitting down for this game and this is what people say about Karlaa. I admire her courage to get things done. Karlaa forward thinking and commitment to excellence shows the team how to exceed and outperform expectations. We just We just witnessed that. Karlaa’s contributions have been invaluable. That’s a colleague of hers. I cannot recommend Karlaa enough. And I love this one. Karlaa creativity, her wisdom, her determination make her one of the most valuable colleagues I’ve ever worked with Karla and we just worked those numbers was wonderful. When wasn’t that nice? So man, I encourage you guys connect with Karlaa on LinkedIn as you’re you’re just getting a little taste of all of this. Amazing. Karlaa, let’s continue forward. You showed us if you guys just started joining us. Boy go back and hit the rewind because you want to. You want to see the guides that she’s creating. By using AI you’ll look like she’s creating HTML code. with AI, this is absolutely phenomenal. Karlaa, what do you have anything else that you wanted to share show us today.
Karlaa Gregory 30:07
Um, not to show but another thing is to I use it to our whole team to better our processes. So, you know, I’m used to HubSpot. So now that I’m in Salesforce, you know, I’m not sure like some of the the intricacies like how to do this. And also since our Salesforce doesn’t custom built, that also makes it a little bit harder. So I can use Salesforce as my own free or 20 all demoff Chat GBT for a consultant and say, hey, I want to do this what is the best way to do it? So like if we want leads to go in automatically and filter here? How can I do that? And don’t tell me step by step like login to lightning click on this have your Salesforce admin do XYZ
Curt Anderson 30:56
Wow, okay. Is there How How did you do now is have you figured out anything with like cooking kitchen like you know, the weekend like as AI helping you with recipes, I’m just teasing. I
Karlaa Gregory 31:09
was like, probably.
Curt Anderson 31:13
I can’t I might have Damon maybe we could impress the wives we might start using AI to help us in the kitchen somehow. And like, I don’t know, that’s another story for another time. But, Karlaa,
Karlaa Gregory 31:22
if you tell him what’s in your fridge, yeah.
Curt Anderson 31:26
You know, I’ve got yogurt I’ve got peanuts and I’ve got like, what can I make right So Karlaa let’s let’s go here. Do you remember what it was like life was like your marketing world without AI.
Karlaa Gregory 31:38
I was stressed and I never had enough time to do anything. I like my output was it was great but it was slow. So I didn’t have as much as much time and also it did kind of help me with my own with my employees. So I do have one Her name is Sharif but she’s great. And there’s times where it’s like I am knee deep and trying to like edit and stylizes guide and I want to show you you know I want to teach you SEO so bad typing in the chat GPT and like do a few and I’ll let you know if you’re on the right course. So like a few weeks ago, she learned like are the optimal links for like metadata and meta titles, meta descriptions so she got all that and then she did 50 of them for me because it was a lot
Curt Anderson 32:25
right? So man I mean I’m just blown away David Right How much like you’ve taken it to like a whole new level. My rural Dean says no Excel Pro and AI is a good partner when we know how slow learning curve but must learn for show and so she sort of ileka says by AI you can also change the image into text format. Brenda says the more you use AI the easier and more exciting it will get. And lastly Brenda says I consider AI my personal VA I use it for everything I even have done obituaries to love letters for sweethearts at Valentine’s hashtag no limits. I agree with you 100%. Brenda This is getting dropped your job your comments, love your ideas. Let us know how you’re using AI. We have an AI expert here. Great opportunity drop any questions in the chatbox we’d be happy to address those or tackle those Karlaa let’s go here for supervisors management folks up up the food chain have they been super receptive encouraging Are you teaching them educating them? What’s that relationship been like for AI with with folks up the food chain?
Karlaa Gregory 33:36
That you’re that I haven’t heard any thing that my VP so I have a manager Brittany she loves AI she she uses po actually Pro has bought all the things they have every single kind of AI in one so I think there’s limits behave you’re interested in trying mall to see what’s your favorite gift pillow whirl shameless plug. But you have a VP to VP of Business Development and she started to use AI just to give her a hand with like social content that I’ve helped her with. So she’s increased like output there. And a lot of times where I might not be quite too sure like what to help her with. She uses chat GBT like hey this is sound great. And I can say yes sir. This is great. Run with it and you know we go from there. It’s really fun.
Curt Anderson 34:26
Is there I have a goofy question. Is there something that you found with AI just isn’t just isn’t clicking isn’t working? Are you like me and I’ve tried a few times and are not yet.
Karlaa Gregory 34:37
Um it was at one point was the tone until I realized that you can tell chatty PT like how you want it to speak. So I found one of my really first landing pages I met with Chad GPT and he like I copied and pasted the whole thing just because I thought it was cool and it was like you know, superior Japanese engineering dive into The world and it was it was so bad. Like, I thought it was cool. Like it made me think of like a superhero introduction. Right but in actuality it didn’t match like the tone or like our, our voice. Yeah. And so once she once I realized to say, hey, I want you to use a direct tone, I want you to do it this way, then it got to be a little bit more human sounding and not like, super, you know, in a world far far away like movie guy, or was a movie Phone Guy. Like it cut all that out? And I can easily tell when people you chat if you see now because a lot of people don’t know you can change the tone. So there’s a lot of times where I’ll see like content from like other people. And I’m like, You they change the tone, please.
Damon Pistulka 35:41
Change the
Curt Anderson 35:42
Tone. That could be hashtag change the tone, right? How about that? So
Karlaa Gregory 35:47
speaking of hashtag chat, GBT will give you hashtags that don’t work. Please don’t use those hashtags. They don’t work there. It’s just making up stuff.
Damon Pistulka 35:54
Yeah. Yeah.
Curt Anderson 35:55
So another tip, don’t don’t use the hashtags. Folk focus on the tone. Hey, Damon. Whitney, you asked salutely. If you’re just joining us, you have to well, you, Karlaa, you might have met Whitney, she was at the industrial marketing Summit. And I know, Whitney, you caught Karlaa, she’s just been dropping pure, pure gold. And again, if you’re just joining us go back and hit the replay button. Because this has just been a phenomenal conversation. Karlaa, I want to change gears for one second on a personal note, and I might be kicking off guard probably not prepared for this. What is the best business or career advice that you have received in your young career? What’s some of the best advice that you feel that’s really been just whether it’s a friend, a relative, a mentor, what some great advice that you’ve received, that helps you
Karlaa Gregory 36:45
don’t be afraid to break things. So with marketing, we can always do it the same old way. But if we don’t try anything new, or we don’t break stuff, we can’t make it better. So if we don’t break our processes, or then we not like, don’t get fired, but like, if you don’t like break it and see if this way is gonna work better, then what are you doing it for or and also, just to have a purpose when doing so whether it’s a personal purpose or knowing that, hey, using jet to continue, you’re using your own great math skills. PPC is giving us more better, more traffic, more qualified traffic, let’s do more of this not like Let’s all make a tic tock. I mean, you know, I’m not sure if tick tock will be around still in a year. But you know, don’t just jump on trends, because you want to like give it a whirl, but also just like know your audiences, but do it with a purpose and do it with data behind it. So if I know I’m getting like I said, I’m getting more PPC traffic, I’m going to put money, more money on PPC, I’m not going to put more money and effort on organic social or anything. Yeah.
Curt Anderson 37:51
Absolutely love it. And so and Whitney says yes, of course I remember Karlaa loved her on the channel. So Whitney, thank you for the comment here. So Carla was start winding down, I want to recap a couple things. So you’re using AI and just you know, fill in any blanks, you know, on buyer personas, creating content specifically targeted with your tone to those buyer personas, you’re using it for coat, you’re taking an Excel spreadsheet formula and convert it into an HTML page, I heard you say that you use it for landing pages in my recovering just kind of just probably you’re using it for your your, your assistant or the person that works on your team. Whenever they are challenged with SEO, they’re using it kind of for guide, you’re using it for Salesforce for your guide on how to better things. You’re using it for interpretation on high level technical terms that are in your industry. Are you Is there anything about this? What are you not using AI for how about that list?
Karlaa Gregory 38:53
To schedule my day, I guess because I use it for a lot. Another thing I do use AI for is also summarized data. So like, you know you can upload a Excel spreadsheet and say summarizes, yeah, but right now a lot of AI is built into things already. So like when I log on to sem rush, you can see that it has some like aI stuff or even GPT GPT for GA four has that in there too now where it just gives you a rough summary. Yeah.
Curt Anderson 39:20
I love that. And I even I just I saw a video over the weekend where a guy was like you can take your schedule, you can put it AI and AI will help you prioritize well, your top, you know, so
Karlaa Gregory 39:31
how about today? Then we’re gonna be
Curt Anderson 39:35
Karla. We’re gonna be working like two hours a week after this episode here. So I love a lot of hacks. We’re gonna start we’re gonna start winding down. Carla, you are in the world of manufacturing. You spoke at the industrial marketing Summit. I those replays have gotta be out there somewhere. So I encourage anybody check out the industrial marketing Summit. Karlaa just absolutely crushed it on a wonderful panel discussion. You’re, you’re in a b2b space industrial manufacturing. What attracted you to manufacturing? You could have gone into many different industries. Why? What’s so cool about manufacturing?
Karlaa Gregory 39:59
What was cool that manufacture? And I’m kidding, it’s, it’s like a blend of like traditional marketing, but still like modern like technology. So when you think about it, like, yeah, digital marketing is really big everywhere. But when you think about the people who are like making the gearboxes or making the places where gearboxes go, a lot of them are like, you know, in the bag, they might just be using like pen and paper, a lot of times you can’t have phones on the floor, right. So it’s, you have to, like, think a little bit hard on how to, like, attract them. So that’s why like one of the guides I made, it’s printable book printable, it’s printable, because you might need to, like print it out, and like write it, you know, traditionally and not just have like, your iPad on the floor, because that’s a safety concern. So it’s like, once you think about that, and then you think about who’s in the industry. So I’ve been I’ve gotten a trade show, I kind of see, like, the age range and stuff. So it’s like, I know, you’re I know, for sure, like I make a tick tock of it, they’re not gonna see it. I know if I make a tweet, and they might see it, they might not right. But if I stick on like LinkedIn, if I stick on Facebook, I know like, it’ll catch them somewhere. Right.
Curt Anderson 41:23
So very, very, very placing. There’s older people in that space, right? It’s Brenda. Yeah, she’s been very polite. She’s. So Brenda says, I’m so glad I listened. It’s been very informative going, Brenda. Thank you, guys. John. We’re getting any questions, we’re gonna start winding down. So how about this, Karlaa? So for folks, young folks out there, I think there’s something like 1.8 million open positions in manufacturing, manufacturing is so amazing. So cool, Damon, we have the privilege of interviewing all sorts of wonderful folks, this episode here, ranks in the top, you know, whatever, of what cool cutting edge things are going on, in manufacturing. Karlaa, why should all the cool kids out there, all young folks be considering a career in manufacturing, just like yourself?
Karlaa Gregory 42:12
Oh, because it’s always changing. And there’s, it’s always gonna be here like you can’t. Like during COVID, we were open, we had the I don’t think we had any layoffs, we were great. I kept my job. A lot of people kept their jobs here. So there’s always going to be a need from it, like something always has to be built. robots can’t build everything. You know, like robots aren’t going to dig coal. Like there’s, there’s so much stuff where you weren’t necessary. So you know, there’s job security. And plus, there’s not many digital marketers in. I mean, there’s there’s a lot of marketers in manufacturing. But if you even look at the size of like IMS, or IML, a lot of us are like one people team. So this, there’s only going to be one year or two you like, you know, my team’s My department is blessed enough to have like, a videographer on staff. So I’m not over here doing video and photos and digital marketing like we have. We have enough. But even our team of four is considered big. Yeah. So and then also just another word advice is just to be a great T shaped marketer. So like, I’m really glad that I did take myself out of the niche of social media. But I consider myself a generalist. So a T shaped marketer is when you’re good at a lot of things. But your core competency is one thing. So like, my core competency is SEO. That’s why I use chat TBT to do keyword research and make all these like SEO optimized blogs. I’ve seen organic traffic jump a lot for some of our new products. But I’m still I can still do social, I can still do email, I can still do all these things. So that way, you know if you ever do leave or another channel jump jumps in, and you don’t have to be stuck there. Like I’m so glad I got out of social media the niche because as I think I left in 2019 So that’s when like reels were coming along. And I hate making reels like it takes so long, but that’s what everyone wanted in 2019 So it’s like I’m a jerk. I could have done email marketing. I could have done any any of those and not just been the girl it’s it’s on Facebook all day. Yeah,
Curt Anderson 44:16
absolutely love it. So all right, Damon, thoughts, takeaways. What did you learn today? This is you’re using AI a lot, but I know a ton. what’s your takeaway?
Damon Pistulka 44:26
Now? Lots of good stuff here. I mean, like you said earlier, go back and listen to it. Because if people are marketing you gave such great advice in here. Karlaa, I’m gonna try this. Converting a spreadsheet HTML. I think that’s cool. We got several things that we’ve been trying to do that with and honestly, never tried it that way. And I think it’ll, it’ll solve a lot. Yeah, yeah. So cool.
Curt Anderson 44:52
All right, guys. Let’s start winding down. So Karlaa, I have one last question for you. Two last questions for you. I promise. What is the best way for folks out there to connect with you if they want to learn more jump on the conversation, which best way to reach you reach out to me
Karlaa Gregory 45:07
on LinkedIn, I’m always I always have that tab open. Because I’m always you know I’m always talking to people I’m always finding really great content so meet me there. Nice.
Curt Anderson 45:15
Awesome so it’s Karlaa double A battery Grigory? You want to connect with her on LinkedIn? She’s just absolutely amazing. Just great speaker you find her at different events. Cut. Do you have any events coming up on the horizon? Any speaking gigs coming up anytime soon?
Karlaa Gregory 45:32
No, I just did one on Friday. So I haven’t had anything else. I’m being better for another one. So we’ll see. Awesome,
Curt Anderson 45:39
awesome. Well, wishing you massive success. I have one last question for you. Damon. You ready? Let’s ready. Let’s do this.
Karlaa Gregory 45:47
The Backstreet Boys and Girls my favorite artists. Oh,
Curt Anderson 45:51
you’re right. You know what you’re right there. So let’s take it one step further. I was going to ask you if we were playing a baseball game. What is your walk up song? I don’t know what that means. So if you you’re at a baseball game and the batter you’re the batter and let’s say it’s bottom of the night. There’s two outs. There’s somebody on second base and like Damon and I like we need the winning run right now. In we there’s nobody better than Karlaa W battery to get up there and hit in the winning run. So you grab your helmet, you grab your bat and as you’re walking up to the plate, they blare your favorite song to get you super fired up so you’re gonna hit smash that running run. What would be your favorite song as you’re walking up the plate to hit that winning run?
Karlaa Gregory 46:37
Oh, I thought you said sign sounds like I have no idea what a baseball sign is. Um Let’s see everybody my Backstreet Boys, everybody
Curt Anderson 46:47
team and that’s where your favorites right there to the Backstreet Boys is
Karlaa Gregory 46:51
there? Yeah, I met them in 2019. I mean, 2017 and I cried like a an adult child.
Curt Anderson 47:00
just brings back the nostalgia. Just don’t you just have time? Time and who doesn’t love the Backstreet Boys For Goodness gracious. So, Karlaa, that was a great answer. Thank you. So Brenda says I’ve got the power. That’s a great song there. Brenda. Thank you. So Karlaa, I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know how busy you are. Curt Anderson 47:59
