Digital Strategy for Manufacturers: Focus on What You Do Best
A digital strategy for manufacturers should start with what your company does best and who needs it most. From there, you can build a clear path that helps those buyers find you and take action.
However, many manufacturers struggle with focus. They offer many products and services. They serve different industries. As a result, their website tries to speak to everyone.
The Digital Game Plan takes a different approach.
Damon Pistulka explains, “It’s really an eight-plus-step process where you align your digital strategy with your strengths.”
That alignment can help manufacturers focus their message, identify their best customers, and create a better buying experience.
Start With Your Manufacturing Core Strengths
A strong digital strategy starts by identifying what your company does exceptionally well. You do not need to market every capability with the same level of effort.
Many manufacturers grow by taking whatever work comes through the door. That strategy can keep machines running. Yet over time, it can also create a long list of products, services, and markets.
Falconer Electronics provides a great example.
Founded in 1985, Falconer Electronics produced many types of electronic assemblies. However, the company had little digital presence. The team wanted to create a stronger online footprint and generate new opportunities.
The Digital Game Plan helped Falconer dig into its core strengths. That process highlighted areas such as wire harness assemblies and ground straps.
However, focus also required strategic subtraction.
Some older capabilities no longer offered the best growth opportunity. Instead of trying to promote everything, Falconer could focus on areas where it already had deep experience.
As Damon notes, the process helps companies “understand what I should look like a bit more, and how I want to sound a bit more to get the clients.”
The takeaway is simple. Ask what you do best before asking what you should market.
Build a Digital Strategy for Manufacturers Around Soulmate Customers
A digital strategy for manufacturers becomes much stronger when core strengths connect with the right customers. The Digital Game Plan calls these ideal buyers Soulmate Customers.
Falconer was already making thousands of ground straps for one automotive customer. That led to an important question: Who else needs ground straps?
Suddenly, an existing capability offered a much larger opportunity.
Next, Falconer could look at potential customers through the Digital Game Plan’s Rounding the Bases exercise. This process separates opportunities into singles, doubles, triples, and home runs.
From there, the company can build buyer personas around the customers it wants to attract.
As Damon explains, this focus “allowed them to focus their marketing strategy into one area where they can really excel.”
That is a powerful shift.
Instead of asking, “How do we market everything we do?” ask, “Who benefits most from what we do best?”
Then consider how those buyers search for solutions. They may use Google, AI search, marketplaces, paid ads, or other digital channels.
When your strengths match a clear Soulmate Customer, your marketing becomes much more focused.
Make the Buying Journey Frictionless
The best digital strategy for manufacturers does more than generate traffic. It makes it easy for the right customer to move forward.
Falconer took that idea to another level.
Customers could find standard ground straps online. Yet buyers often needed different lengths, widths, or configurations.
So, Falconer created a ground strap configurator.
Think about the customer for a moment. An engineer or purchasing professional may have 25 items to source that day. That person does not want to spend hours trading emails just to receive a quote.
Instead, the configurator allows the buyer to select options, choose a quantity, submit information, and move forward.
Curt Anderson describes the goal as a “frictionless experience.”
That experience connects directly to the buyer journey. First, search and marketplaces can help create awareness. Next, the configurator supports the exploration stage. Most importantly, the customer can take action without unnecessary roadblocks.
The lesson goes beyond configurators.
Look at your own buying process. Do customers need to call for basic information? Does every RFQ require several emails? Are you making buyers wait when you could help them move forward?
Removing friction can turn digital marketing into a true customer experience.
Digital Strategy for Manufacturers: Put Your Digital Game Plan in Place
A digital strategy for manufacturers works best when it connects your core strengths, Soulmate Customers, and buyer journey. The goal is not to do more marketing. Instead, the goal is to focus on what matters most.
Start with your strengths. Use strategic subtraction to remove distractions. Then identify the customers who gain the most value from those strengths.
Finally, make it easy for those customers to succeed.
As Curt Anderson says, “Whatever you do, help your customer be successful, and that’s going to help drive your success.”
That may be the most important part of the entire Digital Game Plan.
When you know what you do best, who needs it most, and how to remove friction from their journey, you can stop trying to be everything to everyone.
Instead, you can put a focused Digital Game Plan in place.
